Sah Dan Testing Requirements

WTSDA Region 2 – 4th Degree Master or Instructor

RequirementTesting for Sah Dan (4th Degree Master or Instructor)
WTSDA Requirements
Age RequirementsBe at least 22 years of age.
Time in Training
  • Have a minimum of 12 years of training with the WTSDA (or equivalent qualifications).
  • Minimum of four years training since Sam Dan before invitation to apply for Ko Dan Ja and
    have an excellent record of attendance and dedication.
  • Time begins the following year of Sam Dan Test.
Special Eligibility Requirements
  • Be recommended by an officially recognized and registered Master certified by the WTSDA.
  • Attended and actively participated in most studio and regional events.
  • Served on Gup and Dan examination panels, per request from other studios and/or Regional Director.
  • Qualified as an International Judge, with comprehension of all championship rules.
  • Attended regional championships serving as a Center Judge.
  • Attended and Actively participated in a minimum of two international events while a Sam Dan.

Sah Dan Master Candidates
*requirements to obtain Master (red stripe)
  • Own and maintain a registered WTSDA studio for at least one year.
  • A Sah Dan Instructor may be eligible for Sah Dan Master after obtaining and maintaining a
    WTSDA registered studio with at least 25 registered students for a minimum period of one year.
  • A single studio may have two masters if there is a minimum of 100 students, three masters for
    a minimum of 150 students and four Masters for a minimum of 200 students with studio
    owner’s approval.
    All numbers must be verified through Headquarters.
  • Grandmaster may extend testing eligibility to a Sah Dan Instructor without studio ownership
    by reason of an individual’s sacrifice and extreme dedication to the WTSDA.

Dae Ryung (Sparring)
  • One Step Sparring Hands & Kicks 1–30
  • Must exhibit effective application of one, two, and three step sparring, including multiple opponents.
  • Ho Sin Sul 1–30
  • Must be able to demonstrate highly effective defense against: Knife, Staff, Mugging type
    attack, Multiple Attackers, sitting and/or lying, Misc. weapons.
  • Special Sparring Techniques as required by testing board (i.e. multiple opponents,
    blind-folded, and/or against weapons).
BreakingSah Dan Instructor candidates must demonstrate speed and power breaking ability. Sah Dan Master
candidates may be requested to demonstrate breaking techniques. Techniques will be determined by
the panel of examiners.
Written TestAll knowledge gained in junior ranks may be reviewed, including all material in the Dan Manual
and additional WTSDA publications. Areas to be covered: Terminology, Philosophy, Technical, and
Medical Knowledge.
ThesisOnce approved to test, the Grandmaster may assign a thesis topic or the candidate may request
approval of a topic through the submission of a thesis proposal. Candidates will conduct a
thorough examination of the approved subject and submit a 20,000 words or more. Information about
formats, requirements, deadlines, submission of the proposal and thesis approval process is
available in the WTSDA Thesis Guidelines document.
*Note: You may not start your thesis or approval process until after
your first year attending Masters Clinic.
FeesA one-time testing fee will be due after the successful completion of your second year test at
the Masters Clinic. See RD or ARD for amount, subject to change.
*Note: Must be able to cover all costs incurred traveling and
participating in regional events and 2 years at the Masters Clinic.
Region 2 Requirements
Number of Regional EventsRegular and consistent attendance to Region 2 Events (avg. 75% or more) while a Sam Dan is
required. Minimum attendance and participation does not guarantee recommendation.
Regional Leadership PositionMust hold a regional leadership position, assistant position, or be a part of a committee to
further grow and improve the region.
**Special Note: Meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee eligibility. A Sah Dan
Candidate should have a high level of dedication to the WTSDA, Region, and their Studio.
Judging CertificationCertified as an International Judge prior to Evaluation Year.
Region 2 Evaluation Year Process
SubmissionAfter your 3rd full year as a Sam Dan (not including testing year), a candidate must be
recommended by an active WTSDA Master. Must meet all WTSDA and Region 2 Requirements. Final
determination is by Regional Director.
*Note: A non-master studio owner may request submission but final
recommendation must be from an active Master. Additional evaluation may be requested.
Evaluation Year Process
  • Required to attend ALL Region 2 events as an instructor or competitor
    (where applicable).
  • Successfully pass a private physical evaluation at the first event of the year by the RD
    and ARD. If unsuccessful, candidate may be asked to participate in a 2nd physical evaluation
    later in the year or asked to wait another year.
  • Required to attend World Championship or US Nationals during evaluation year.
After Completion of Evaluation YearThe Regional Director will make final determination if candidate will be submitted to
Grandmaster. Submission to Grandmaster does not guarantee invitation to test at Master
Clinic the following year.
Grandmaster has final determination on who is invited to
test at Masters Clinic.
